The Creative Psyche
Identify two or more scenes in movies, books or games that have evoked crying or some other powerful emotion that you felt was odd, unexpected, or significant. Discuss what it was about the scenes(s) that elicited that reaction and try to identify if there is there a pattern in your responses that reveals something about you and/or your creativity (e.g. vulnerabilities, anxieties, or desires). (Jung, C. (1997). Jung on active imagination (pp. 1-20). (Ed. Joan Chodorow). London: Routledge.) (Tacey, D. (Ed.). (2012). The jung reader. (pp. 1 -20). Some of the two scenes that are at the top of my head that I classify as something emotional that made me give a reaction towards are from two video games named ‘The Last of Us’ and ‘Silent hill 2’. The Last of Us is a survival game in a zombie infested world and we follow two main characters Joel and Ellie. The main objective of the game is as Joel must deliver Ellie to a militia group because she is a cure for the zombie virus but as Joel finally transports Ellie to them he forms a bond with her and it’s revealed to him the only way to create a cure is for Ellie to die in an operation. Upon hearing of this revelation Joel goes against the militia and kidnap Ellie and lies to her to keep her safe because he sees her as the daughter he lost during the zombie outbreak. This moment made me filled conflicted as of what Joel did which was out of love but completely wrong where as the situation in this case is if we shut out our desires we injure our mortality (Tracey, 2012, p.20) making it seem that we would do anything for the sake of love or we lose everything.
The second game is a survival horror game and it’s about James a withdrawn person who lost his wife and is dealing the loss for three years until he receives a letter from his wife telling him that she will be waiting in their special place, which is in a town called Silent Hill. This leaves James confuse as to how his dead wife for three years was able to write a letter and even though this seems bizarre to James he ventures forth to find his wife. There are obstacles trying to prevent him from meeting her but it seems that his wife is the only thing going for him in his life. When he finally reached his destination it seemed that Mary is really dead and the revelation is that Mary did not die from the disease she was diagnosed with but rather it was James that killed Mary Because he could not handle the suffering his wife was going through. To me the main character is in a cycle of his own complexes and remains stuck in an all-enveloping nightmare from his action so that nothing is progressed ( Jung, 1997, p.12).
I think the pattern here is that I recognise my viewpoint of the world as something not black or white but grey. Being the examples of the two characters that were in completely different situation yet some similarities of complication regarding of lost loved ones for example, Joel lost his daughter and that sort of impact resulted in saving his adopted daughter, which caused harm for others. As for James he throughout the entire game is trying to find his wife like any loving husband would but when it reveals she is dead whereas James has no choice but to accept it and move on as hard as it may be. I personally relate to the grief of losing a loved one and it changed me to the point of being a different person, “The personal pain of an individual is not denied, but in addition to reconstructing early origins” (Jung, 1997, p.12).
