Reading Response #3

Creative Environments

What is the relationship between creative practice and the environment in which it is presented? How do we find or generate the right environment for our work? Who are our peers and what does collaboration among this group bring to creative practice? (Törnqvist, G.. (2004). Creativity in Time and Space. Geografiska Annaler. Series B, Human Geography, 86(4), 227–243.).

The relationship between creativity and the environment in which it is presented upon is how the effectiveness can influence an individual to be more creative and can create a familiarity from simply being in their preferable environment. By being in their desirable environment they can feel at ease and become comfortable as they will most likely need to on projects or tasks they need to complete which desires a creative mind to complete the said project or task. After all, a wealth of ideas and imagination are expressed through learning the characteristics attached to the creative capacity of the individual (Tornqvist, 2004).

An individual can find the right environment for their work by listing what sort of ideas can influence their creativity and which kind of environment can benefit the creative practice for their work. By finding the right environment to work in, the person must determine what kind of space type and special quality they would prefer their creative mindset. There are five space types categorised as personal space, collaboration space, presentation space, making space and intermission space. As for the special qualities there are also five categorised as knowledge processor, indicator of culture, process enabler, social dimension and source of stimulation. The relations between these two categorise is to determine what sort of environment can be ideal towards someone whose creative thinking must not be interjected with distracting elements that does not seem appropriate in their creative environment (Thoring, 2018).

I think an individual peers are colleagues who have a similar profession or relation to the persons’ line of work. The collaboration between peers can cause influence to the group and improve the creation process by discussing new ideas and feedback. These benefits from peer collaboration can be achieved by being in a social environment where there is a broad understanding of communication and similar interest. An example of a social environment that contributes to an individual creative mindset is the offices of Google. Former Google employees have said that they have gained a great deal from working in their offices and expressed how the environment was an inspiring place to work in. As to what provokes the creative process in the environment is having true flexibility, freedom to be creative, constant innovation, alignment with employees’ wants and needs and a growth and improvement mindset (Forbes, 2018).

So to sum up my conclusion, I believe that a person creative environment can benefit their creative process for the task they are working on at the time and a social environment can also create a positive effect to their creativity. A social environment could encourage an individual to communicate with others for new ideas without having thoughts of bothering them. While as the space types and spatial qualities can determine what kind of environment works well with the work with the person creative process and what kind of work they would like to be invested in.
